Multi-Agency Crackdown in Metro Atlanta Addresses Resurgence of Dangerous Street Racing Activities
In a concerted effort to combat illegal street racing in metro Atlanta, the Atlanta Police Department (APD) spearheaded “Operation Burnt Out,” resulting in 39 arrests. The youngest individual apprehended was just 16 years old, highlighting the critical role parents play in preventing such dangerous activities.
APD Chief Darin Schierbaum noted a decline in street racing incidents compared to previous years but emphasized that even a single occurrence poses significant risks. He stated, “We are seeing the number decrease, but you see the intensity of them. You see the danger level. One is too many.”
The operation, conducted on September 29, was a collaborative effort involving multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office and police departments from Chamblee and College Park. APD Lieutenant Rodney Jones highlighted the severe consequences of street racing, showcasing images of wrecked vehicles that resulted from such activities. He pointed out that recent incidents have escalated to include shootings and fatalities.
A concerning statistic revealed that approximately 44% of street racing arrests involved drivers found in possession of firearms. Deputy Chief Shelly Faulk from the Fulton County Solicitor General’s Office indicated that most defendants have pleaded guilty to the original charges. Penalties for street racing can include up to 12 months in jail, a $1,000 fine, and suspension of the driver’s license. Additional charges, such as weapons offenses or fleeing from police, can lead to even longer sentences.
Chamblee Police Chief Michael Dieppa emphasized the importance of a unified approach to safeguard innocent motorists throughout the metro area. He remarked, “The law-abiding citizens… don’t want to encounter street racing.”
Chief Schierbaum expressed hope that state lawmakers would consider legislative measures to expedite the seizure and forfeiture of vehicles involved in illegal street racing, aligning with practices in other states.
